Front Porch Christmas Decorating Ideas: A Country Christmas by Lakeitha Duncan

Decorating your own front porch for Christmas can be a challenge. It’s right there for all the world and your neighbors to see. But the pressure is really on when you’re styling someone else’s front porch, as Lakeitha Duncan can attest.

Lakeitha is the author of the lifestyle blog Lakeitha Duncan. She agreed to take part in our Holiday Style Challenge. We pick some of the best bloggers on the internet and send them each a mystery box of Christmas decorations from The Home Depot. Then we let them come up with their fresh Christmas decorating ideas.

Lakeitha chose a theme to fit the look of the home she was decorating. And the results are smashing. The front porch is cheery, warm and ready for Christmas. The style is unified and very practical, too. Read on to see how Lakeitha achieved the look she was after.

I had originally planned to decorate my own front door space for the challenge, but things went south after letting my husband have free range on painting our front steps. I’ll save you the pictures of that and move along with the space I did decide to bring holiday cheer to… my parents!

The Inspiration

With their space, I knew I wanted to head in a different direction than what I’m comfortable with. With this being my first time decorating outdoors for the holidays, and considering that it wasn’t my own space, I wanted to tap into what I thought my mom and dad would like for themselves. I decided a “country holiday” was in order.

It all began with the garland that The Home Depot sent me. I love this garland. I had enough to trim all of the railing on the porch with more left over to do a mantel if I wanted to. I also decided to add a few clusters of ornaments to up the wow factor a bit.

Decorate Every Available Inch

Because I love the idea of taking advantage of every inch of the home (outdoors included) for decorating, I figured it would be fun to set up the porch in a way that it can be enjoyed while the kids play with their outdoor toys.

After placing chairs and an old side table out, I started fluffing the space and adding holiday cheer. I knew I wanted an outdoor tree on the porch. I went to The Home Depot and found an Alberta Spruce for less than $30. Because I had other plans for the space, I didn’t want to overdue it with the trimmings on the tree. After wrapping the pot it came in with burlap and tying it with a ribbon, I figured it was good to go!

Make the Wreath Special

The next project that I had to tackle was the front door. I found a wreath at The Home Depot that had pinecones and red berries already attached to it. To make the wreath more personalized, I added a letter D to it with some burlap ribbon and a few of the red shatterproof ornaments to give it more visual presence and it was ready to hang.

If you notice, I hung the wreath at the bottom of the door which I thought was a nice unexpected touch. To the left of the door I placed one of the lanterns I was sent and it was perfect! I actually had two to work with, but only one worked on the porch. I love that it takes up just enough space to not be overbearing.

The welcome mat is also from The Home Depot’s line of Christmas rugs and mats. I can’t tell you how convenient it was to be able to go inside Home Depot and find everything I needed for Christmas decorating (and I promise I’m not just saying that!).

Now if we zoom out a bit, you will see a few other additions to the porch.

Front Porch Christmas Decorating Ideas: White Glittered Poinsettias

Poinsettias, Christmas Lights and Chalkboard

The faux white poinsettia I was sent were perfect at the base of the steps. I popped them right into some urns that I already had. You can also find inexpensive urns at Home Depot (FYI).

My dad strung some of the clear lights around the  top f the house. You can’t really tell here, but at night they are so pretty! Combine that with the pre-lit garland and you have yourself a winning combo in my book.

Back on the porch, I placed a framed chalkboard in the corner. I had the frame already and had a piece of plywood cut to fit it at Home Depot. You can also find the chalkboard paint there.

I hope you enjoyed my idea of a country Christmas. My parents loved it so much, that they are leaving it up until the holidays are actually here… Gotta love them!

Now all we have to do is sit back and wait on Santa.
